Two animal rights activists who endangered the lives of sealers on the ice floes last year were fined more than $40,000 for twice coming within the legal limit of Canada’s annual East Coast seal hunt.

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society members, Peter Hammarstedt of Sweden and Alexander Cornelissen of the Netherlands, were not present in Nova Scotia provincial court Thursday, nor were they represented by any legal counsel.

The two men were each found guilty in July of two counts of coming within one-half nautical mile (926 metres) of the legal seal hunt.

They both received fines of $11,607 for each offence, which includes charges for victim fine surcharges and court costs.
