Attempts to rescue a climber who fell into a crevasse on Mt. Slesse east of Chilliwack were called off yesterday because the area is too unstable.
The Abbotsford climber, whose name has not been released, fell Saturday morning after being hit by falling ice and is presumed dead.

RCMP and search and rescue crews decided to call off the search because the northeast face of Mt. Slesse is steep and rescue crews would be at extreme risk of falling rock and ice.
Officials said even a helicopter rescue would be too risky.
Chilliwack RCMP Const. Bert Paquet said the man had been hiking with a friend and the two had been on more than 40 climbs together.
