Hundreds of office workers in Edmonton’s downtown were interrupted by the squelching sounds of sirens and firetrucks, after a blaze broke out in the upper floor of a building.

Smoke and flames were seen gushing out of win-dows at the top floor at a building on Rice Howard Way at 101 A Avenue and 100 Street shortly after 3:30 p.m., one day after a blaze gutted two businesses several blocks away.

“I just heard a loud pop and then a window that popped out — that’s when the fire quickly spread,” said Tatjana Matic, who was on a smoke break when the fire erupted.

Firefighters say the top floor of the building was vacant, and it’s uknown if anyone was in the top level when the flames first appeared. No one was hurt, firefighters said.
