Volunteers in Fort Saskatchewan’s lacrosse program say they’ve lost an important friend, well-liked coach and a man who was always looking out for others.
Fort Saskatchewan resident David Nyhuis, 48, was struck by lightning while golfing at a course in Smoky Lake Aug. 3, but died last week from his injuries.
Nyhuis, who leaves behind a wife and four children, was heavily involved in Fort Saskatchewan lacrosse programs and “wasn’t the type of person looking for recognition,” says one friend.
“One of his big beliefs was to keep kids active in sports so they don’t get themselves in trouble,” said Stewart Begg.
He says Nyhuis sponsored minor-sports teams every year because the father thought it was important.
