Sens unleash on Canes

Hurricanes 1, Senators 5

The Skinny: The Senators shook free from a five-game losing skid as they knocked off the Carolina Hurricanes for their first win since a 3-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers on Dec. 30.

First W of ’09: Last night’s victory against Carolina marks the team’s first win in the New Year after losses to the New York Rangers, Boston Bruins, Buffalo Sabres, New Jersey Devils and Toronto Maple Leafs earlier this month.

The Halfway Mark: Ottawa played game number 41 last night, signifying the midway mark of the regular season. The Senators have 34 points with a record of 14-21-6.

Number 500: Ottawa forward Mike Fisher suited up in his 500th NHL game last night, all with the Senators.

Slumpbuster: Fisher celebrated his 500th big league game with his fourth goal of the season and first in 20 games.

Back In Net: Brian Elliott made his second straight start between the pipes for Ottawa since being called up from the AHL last weekend. Elliott made 23 saves for his second NHL victory.

The Next Game: The Senators are in Atlanta tonight for a contest against the Thrashers.

Ruutu returns
Jarkko Ruutu returned to the Senators’ lineup after serving a two-game suspension for biting Sabres forward Andrew Peters’ gloved hand in a 4-2 loss in Buffalo last week.
