Sentencing hearing today for young man in Toronto teen Stefanie Rengel’s death

TORONTO – A sentencing hearing begins today in Toronto for a young man who stabbed 14-year-old Stefanie Rengel to death.

The 19-year-old man is known only as D.B. because he was under 18 at the time of the killing – though his birthday was four days later.

He pleaded guilty in April to first-degree murder, saying he killed Rengel on New Year’s Day 2008 to appease his jealous girlfriend.

The girlfriend, Melissa Todorovic was sentenced as an adult in July to life with no chance of parole for seven years – the maximum for someone under 16 at the time of the offence.

A Crown prosecutor has said he will be seeking an adult sentence for D.B., which would mean an automatic life sentence with no chance of parole for 10 years.

The judge found Todorovic placed relentless pressure” on D.B. through instant messages, text messages and Facebook messages threatening to withhold sex from him if he didn’t kill Rengel, her perceived rival.
