Cindy Klassen, Canada’s two-time female athlete of the year, turned in her skates for a spatula and grill yesterday as she picked up a shift at McDonald’s.

Klassen, along with local TV anchors, was at the Westhills McDonald’s location serving customers for McHappy Day to raise money for local children’s charities.

The multiple Olympic gold medallist also found McHappy Day was an excellent chance to meet some of her fans.

“It’s going to be fun to talk to customers and interact with people,” said Klassen. “It’s going to be a different experience going from sports to working at McDonald’s.”

“People want to see these VIPs who are well-known in the community, and this is people’s chance to see them face to face,” said Laurier Baillargeon, the Calgary and area marketing manager for McDonald’s. “People want to come out and see them, and it helps the event.”

One dollar from every Egg McMuffin, Big Mac and Happy Meal sold was donated to local children’s charities.
