As of Monday, rapper Lil Wayne has a new moniker: Inmate Carter, reports.

The platinum-selling artist (real name: Dwayne Michael Carter Jr.), who began his year-long jail sentence for gun possession on Monday, is facing a lot of new circumstances these days.

The rapper is living among the general population of inmates at the Eric. M. Taylor Center (a facility for sentenced males on Riker’s Island), but he is also afforded a low level of protective custody, due to his public profile.

“Inmate Carter is in a category of housing that we call ‘general population/escort,’” a New York City Department of Corrections official tells People.

That means when he leaves the housing area (his cell or the day room), he will have a captain escorting him at all times.
