Shatner and Nimoy get big welcome from Trekkies

William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy were cheered — and Jar Jar Binks ferociously booed — at Vancouver’s Star Trek Convention yesterday.

The pair, who played the iconic Capt. James T. Kirk and Mr. Spock, discussed their current projects and answered fan questions. Shatner even talked about his experience at the hockey final of the 2010 Olympics.

Multiple generations of Trekkies turned up to the Sheraton Wall Centre Hotel this weekend to hear Shatner and Nimoy speak — among them longtime fans Diana and Keely Park, both in costume.

“I’ve always liked science fiction, and I used to watch the original show with my dad,” Diana said. Thanks to the continuity of the franchise, she said she is grateful to share an affinity for Star Trek with her daughter.

Barry Jenner, who played Admiral William Ross in Seasons 6 and 7 of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, said the cast of his show has the feel of a fraternity. However, he admitted that at times recognizing some actors in their human form has been challenging.

“I met one guy that I had worked with for six months, and I recognized his voice, which was very distinctive, but not his face,” said Jenner.

As it turned out, he explained, that person was Michael Dorn, who played the part of humanoid Lt.-Cmdr. Worf.
