Shattering of cruiser window leads to chase, two arrests

A late-night high-speed police chase that led officers from Surrey to Richmond ended with the arrest of two people.

RCMP said an officer was conducting routine vehicle stop on 123A Street around 3:45 a.m. yesterday when he heard a “whizzing sound” and the rear window of his cruiser shatter.

When he turned around he saw a vehicle speeding away.

“A few minutes later, a second member attempted to stop a vehicle near 80th Avenue and 120th Street,” Insp. Dave Attfield said.

“This vehicle failed to stop and was pursued into Richmond where it was stopped in the area of No. 4 Road and Alderbridge Way.”

A police helicopter as well as officers from Delta, New Westminster and Richmond helped follow the car until it could be stopped.

“At this stage there is no evidence available that clearly connects the damage to the police vehicle to the pursuit,” Attfield said.

“The exact cause of the broken rear window is not known although a bullet, pellet or other projectile is suspected.”
