Shawn Marion returns to his old playground

Phoenix is the city where Shawn Marion became a four-time NBA all-star, one of the main players in the high-octane Suns’ act that entertained fans around the NBA like they had seldom been entertained and got his team within a game of playing for a championship.

Marion has returned with the Raptors and instead of getting wistful about what was and what might have been, he’s taking a decidedly low-key approach to tonight’s Toronto-Phoenix game.

“It’ll be cool, my mother’s going to meet me out there, I’ve got old friends out there,” Marion said in anticipation of his return.

Far more a focal point of the offence in Toronto than he ever was in Miami, the 30-year-old has provided a boost to the Raptors with his athleticism, court savvy and ability to find space to rebound and score.

“He’s giving us a lot of what we need, a lot of what we’ve been doing has come off plays Shawn has made,” said coach Jay Triano.
