Shelter faces stunning blows

A 55-year-old Ottawa man has died from injuries he received after he was struck by a bus June 30, while crossing Murray Street East near King Edward Avenue.

The man, known as Pops to many who knew him at the Shepherds of Good Hope shelter, where he had recently spent the night, was going for breakfast in another building when an STO bus from Gatineau hit him.

His death marks a rough weekend for the Shepherds of Good Hope, which saw the violent beating of 44-year-old Arlene Lahey just after midnight Saturday.

Executive director of Shepherds of Good Hope Paul Soucie said they’ve gone to lengths to create a safe environment around their buildings for the 300 people at the shelter.

They have a “very sophisticated” camera system, personnel patrolling the premises hourly, and at night they lock up the parking area of the shelter to create a sanctuary.

These two incidents come as the Shepherds of Good Hope receive $6 million from the province to create 55 supportive housing units out of the Cardinal Suites hotel on Merivale Road.
