Gun violence took over metro’s streets this weekend and two residents of a North Dartmouth neighbourhood say as the weather warms up, things will only get worse.
Police responded to Brule Street in Dartmouth early Sunday after a complaint of shots being fired at an apartment building after midnight.
Upon arrival, they found bullet holes in two apartments; one round went through the wall of the upper apartment and police found at least three more holes in the unit below.
There were no injuries.
Rob Fredericks and Robert Retieff, who live at a halfway house at 15 Brule St., said with nice weather comes more problems.
“As soon as it gets nice, all these streets are packed,” Retieff said.
“Even little kids are seeing all this s–t — it’s just going to make it worse for the next generation.”
Two women minded a group of young children enjoying the sunshine and their bicycles just outside the building yesterday afternoon.
They said they hadn’t heard of the shooting, but weren’t surprised.
“It’s pretty bad when you can’t even walk around your own neighbourhood,” one woman said.
Fredericks and Retieff said the shooting was gang related and it happened at 33 Brule St., a three-storey walk-up.
“There’s a lot of crack up here,” Retieff said. “And when you’re dealing with that stuff, you’re going to get guns firing.”
Staff Sgt. Sean Auld with the Halifax Regional Police said the major crime unit continues to investigate the incident, but no suspects had been taken into custody as of yesterday evening.
Auld said he didn’t know the motive for the shooting, but had no information to suggest it was gang related.
The occupants of the apartments are not believed to have been specific targets.
