Shooting victim was ‘a nice guy’

Police have identified a shooting victim who has become the city’s 45th homicide victim of the year.

Police have identified a shooting victim who has become the city’s 45th homicide victim of the year.

Richard Durant, who was in his 20s, died after a shooting early Saturday near Dupont Street and Ossington Ave nue.

His childhood friend, who only wanted to be named as Wilson, described Durant as “a nice guy trying to be a man.”

Wilson said “a little scuffle broke out, buddy came back with a gun and shot him.”

Toronto police Det. Sgt. Gary Giroux said the shooting happened following a dispute between Durant and the armed suspect outside Tom’s Café and Sports Bar, at 1146 Davenport Rd.

“We are receiving really good co-operation from the people inside the bar,” Giroux said, adding that there were about 20 people inside at the time of the shooting.

Giroux said Durant, who leaves behind a wife and four-year-old son, was known to police in a minor way but he was not believed to be leading a high-risk criminal life.

A second victim was shot in the leg, but was later released from hospital.
