Jaclyn

Name: Jaclyn Genovese

Age: 22

Occupation: Fashion Retailer

Music is in her soul, and fashion in her sole. Jaclyn Genovese, a classically-trained vocalist, guitarist and pop/ rock singer at heart has, at 22, struck a high note in the world of fashion with the launch of jacflash, a highly stylized men’s and women’s boutique in the west Queen West district.

Like her musical background, the store is a fusion of classic meets contemporary. Designed by Clayton Budd and Genovese’s dad, Geoffrey (who co-owns jacflash), customers are in for a visual treat as soon as they step into the expansive 2,500 square foot space located at 1036-1038 Queen St. W., just west of Ossington Ave.

Enormous floor-to-ceiling windows give rise to a sleek, airy modern space, which pits classic architectural forms against contemporary materials and finishes. The space, like the fashion on the racks, speaks glamour — rock star glamour.

“Jac is a play on my first name,” explains Genovese, who is Italian, Scottish and English. “The flash came from the flash of cameras. We want to bring glamour to our customers through clothing that makes them feel like a star. In fact, many of the labels in our store are worn by stars.”

Labels from Los Angeles, New York City and Europe, some of which are exclusive to Toronto via jacflash. For women, there’s Life and Death, Crimes and Misdemeanours, Young Fabulous and Broke to name a few, and for men, there’s Rare, NSF and Transit.

There are jeans and T’s, belts and boots, and watches and jewelry to choose from alongside what Genovese likes to refer to as “outfits you could wear to the Grammys.”

Dresses range from $200 to $500 while men’s jackets and sweaters go for $150 to $400.

References to music are with good reason. Not only does music run in Genovese’s family (her brother also sings, her sister studied music in New York and her grandfather was a lounge singer), but it is also an integral part of the store and its catchphrase: Fashion-Music-Glamour.

“My family knows how hard it is to be an independent artist trying to promote yourself so we felt that we could help artists get their music out,” Genovese says referring to the store’s independent music and listening lounge. Its purpose is to promote up-and-coming musicians while providing a place for shopaholics to chill out.
