Despite possibly losing their title as host of the world’s longest skating rink to Winnipeggers, Ottawans are remaining loyal to the Rideau Canal Skateway.
With an outdoor skating rink of 8.5-kilometres, Winnipeggers are hoping to eclipse the 7.8-km Rideau Canal in the Guinness World Records. But on opening weekend for the Rideau, skaters were quick to defend their rink.
“It doesn’t take anything away from the canal,” said Alex Taylor. “I think it’s kind of funny.”
Even if Winnipeg does get the Guinness title, visitor Alison Campbell doubts it will affect tourism here because there’s not much to see in Winnipeg.
“I’m not going to fly to Winnipeg just to skate,” she said. “I drive here because I have friends here and there are other things to do.”
The Rideau Canal Skateway has other things working with it to make it more attractive, said Toronto resident Jennifer Styles, who comes to Ottawa around Winterlude every year. While she’s Ottawa, she also takes the opportunity to visit museums shop in the ByWard Market, she said.
The skateway has held its Guinness title since August 2005.
