Skip circus: Group

The Shrine Circus is coming to Ottawa, and a group of animal rights activists are hoping the public will join them in boycotting the event.

Michele Thorn of the Ottawa Animal Defense League will be one of about three dozen activists coming from as far as Kingston to protest outside Lansdowne Park this weekend.

Thorn’s biggest concern is that the circus uses animals from Tarzan Zerbini Circus, a company that owns the animals and creates the live animal acts.

Two elephants and dogs are expected at the show, which is held Friday through Sunday.

“We’re hoping to educate people who are going to the circus for the first time and not knowing what to expect,” said Thorn.

She said protesters will be handing out information on what circus animals have to endure, so that next time, they will think twice about patronizing a show that uses animal acts.
