Small car sales jump

Sales of subcompact cars such as the Toyota Yaris, Hyundai Accent, Chevrolet Aveo and Honda Fit jumped almost 17 per cent or about 11,500 to 120,024 in 2007 from the previous year, statistics from DesRosiers Automotive Consultants showed.
Some buyers of compacts, the country’s biggest segment, have moved down to subcompacts. Sales of compact cars dipped slightly to 401,000.
Sales of small pickup trucks climbed 12.6 per cent to 54,897 and compact sport utility vehicles shot up 16.3 per cent to 210,265 in 2007.
Meanwhile, sales of larger intermediate cars dropped 6.7 per cent to 221,341.
