Smith ‘not happy’ with Clarke

Bobby Smith was cryptic yesterday when asked about the status of embattled defenceman Garrett Clarke.

The Halifax Mooseheads majority owner/head coach made the 18-year-old defenceman a healthy scratch on Saturday against the Moncton Wildcats, a day after benching him for two periods against the P.E.I. Rocket for taking an undisciplined penalty.

“We’ll address that this week because we’re obviously not happy with the penalties he’s taking,” Smith said.

Clarke, a former first-round pick who has no shortage of natural talent, is a physical blue-liner who leads the league in penalty minutes.

But he was benched on numerous occasions by former head coach Cam Russell for taking costly penalties, and it took him just five games to land in Smith’s doghouse.

When asked if there is a possibility Clarke will no longer be with the team, Smith would only say, “I don’t want to elaborate.”

Clarke, who often mans the point on the Mooseheads’ top power-play unit, has a goal, five assists, 53 penalty minutes and a minus-9 rating in 18 games this season.
