Re: “Restaurants fuming over casino plans,” Jan. 18:

On the face of it, the McGuinty government’s plan to allow its own casinos to build smoking rooms for their customers reeks of broken promises, backpeddling, favouritism and hypocrisy. The most interesting aspect of the whole sordid affair is that the government picked this moment to announce it.

Dr. Sheela Basrur, who resigned as Chief Medical Officer of Health and was a long-time advocate and champion of a smoke-free Ontario, is no longer on guard for the public’s health. We have yet to hear from her successor or from the minister responsible for public health, or from the minister responsible for workplace health and safety.

The whole thing sickens me.
