The province has established a snitch line to report unsafe job sites in the wake of the Christmas Eve scaffolding accident that killed four Greater Toronto Area workers.

“Our inspectors can’t be everywhere at all times,” Labour Minister Peter Fonseca said yesterday.

Calls to the snitch line (1-877-202-0008) will be anonymous and there will be translation services for dozens of languages, ministry spokespeople said.

Those calls will help direct the province’s 4,300 health and safety inspectors to dangerous job sites, Fonseca said.

“There are unscrupulous employers out there and we want to stop that practice ... We have seen what can happen when we don’t.”

Weeks after the Christmas Eve tragedy, which killed workers repairing apartment balconies, an expert panel was set up, led by former deputy labour minister Tony Dean. The panel’s recommendations are expected this fall.
