Snowmobiler dies in avalanche on B.C. mountain

Snowmobilers were taking turns riding up a slope when one of them, a 24-year-old man from Alberta, triggered the avalanche.

VALEMOUNT, B.C. — One man is dead after an avalanche on B.C.’s Monashee Mountains, near Valemount.

RCMP spokesman Const. Rob Roffel says a number of snowmobilers were taking turns riding up a slope when one of them, a 24-year-old man, triggered the avalanche.

Roffel says the male, visiting from Sherwood Park, Alta., was buried near the bottom of the hill.

Other snowmobilers were able to locate the man and dig him out but efforts to revive the victim were unsuccessful.

The RCMP and the B.C. Coroners Service are investigating.

Nineteen snowmobilers have died in avalanches in B.C. and Alberta this winter.
