Sobs after shock of teen’s death

Family members, friends, and members of the Iranian community came together at the Ottawa Mosque Thursday to say goodbye to Yazdan Ghiasvand Ghiasi.

The death of the 16-year-old has shocked the community after autopsy results confirmed he died of a gunshot wound after being dumped on the side of Booth Street Monday morning.

Dozens of men gathered around the plain wooden casket of the slain teen, covered with a large green cloth, as it was brought inside the mosque.

Loud sobs could be heard from a group of women overlooking the ceremony on the second level, with their hands covering their faces. Down below, Yazdan’s father, Ali, was clutching the wooden casket as other men consoled him during the imam’s prayer service.

As the pallbearers carried the casket outside, Yazdan’s mother, Negin, was overwhelmed with emotion and began shouting her son’s name.
