Soccer marathon to kick cancer to curb

It all started as friends helping another friend with his battle with cancer.

Seven years later, the Mike Metcalfe 30 Hour Soccer Marathon for Cancer is helping thousands with their fight with the deadly disease. “One person being positively affected by the equipment we purchased is enough to continue doing this,” said Mike Metcalfe.

In 2004, Metcalfe was diagnosed with Stage 3 testicular cancer and treatment had gone unsuccessfully.

Metcalfe’s friends wanted to do something to support his fight and started the marathon. The first year, the marathon raised about $80,000. After his recovery, Metcalfe decided to continue the event and donate the funds raised to the Calgary Health Trust (CHT), which in turn purchases equipment for the Foothills Hospital.

“One hundred per cent of the funds raised goes to something material and tangible that will affect cancer patients right away,” said Metcalfe.

Jaime Croft-Larsen, director of communications with the CHT, says the money raised through the marathon has been invaluable.

The marathon will be held at the Calgary Soccer Centre at 7000–48 St. SE. To participate, register at soccermarathon.org.
