Social standing does matter

When it comes to social networking, mayoral candidate Naheed Nenshi has the edge, according to one civic observer.

DJ Kelly, a political blogger and communication professional, said only a few candidates understand how to properly utilize the Internet.

“The main reason why (Nenshi is) using it the best is because he’s engaging in active conversations,” said Kelly.

Kelly also noted candidates Jon Lord and Paul Hughes are using tools such as Twitter effectively.

Although social networking has become a vital part of campaigning, it may not be overly effective in engaging voters, said Bruce Foster, chair of the department of policy studies at Mount Royal University.

“While (social media) is important, you’re also targeting the segment of the voting population that traditionally has the lowest (voter) turnout,” said Foster, adding many people who use social media fall into the 18- to 35-year-old age group.
