Socking it to them

Ed the Sock is in town and he’s using his gruff, cigar-smoking, foul-mouthed personality to help promote literacy through a free comic giveaway.

Co-hosts of the late night show Ed and Red’s Night Party, Ed the Sock (played by Steven Kerzner) and flame-haired Liana K., are here to appear at two of the Happy Harbor stores as part of Free Comic Day on May 3.

Liana said it’s a good way to reintroduce people to comics and to get people to read, something she says has been on the decrease with comics.

Her darn co-host was less enthusiastic about the mission.

“Liana made me come. Why are we here?” Ed groused. “Lord knows I have nothing but free time.”
Not only is the Sock show now in its 14th season, but Ed and Red also have their own comic book, now into its third issue.

The comic is what Liana described as a “jam book,” where various artists create short stories of Ed and Red’s adventures, the only stipulation being it must be true to their personalities.

“That means they can’t make me stupid and Ed nice,” Liana said.

“The odd thing is that many of [the artists] have trouble drawing capturing Liana’s face correctly, because they can’t get past the cleavage,” Ed added.

They’ll be dressed in their best superhero costume for the comic event, though Ed doesn’t believe they get equal treatment when they dress up.

“She gets to wear her power girl costume,” he said. “I get people trying to touch me. They leave grim.”
The Free Comic Day will be held at all three locations, with Ed and Liana appearing at the downtown store from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the north-side location between 3 p.m. and 5 p.m.
