An idea approved in principle at council could make Halifax the first “solar city” in Canada.

Richard MacLellan, with the Sustainable Environment Management Office, presented council with a $5-million community solar project.

In theory, HRM would provide solar panels to 500 houses to heat water. It will be financed through property tax bills in a user-pay system so the municipality can break even or even make some revenue because of the rebates and grants available for solar power installations.
