Soldiers prepare for Mountain Man Challenge

Members of the One Canadian Mechanized Battle Group, an Edmonton-based faction of the Canadian Forces, were in Hawrelak Park on Thursday morning to do a mini-triathlon in preparation for their Mountain Man Challenge.

“There’s about three or four units from the base that are down here,” said Lt.-Col. Michael Wright, who was getting ready for the exercise.

“We’re gonna do about a 10-kilometre run with a 35-pound rucksack, then a two-kilometre portage with the canoe on our backs, and then get in the river for the actual 10-kilometre route that we’ll be doing on the day of the race.”

“There are a lot of hills,” Wright said of the course.

“There’s a lot of hills out there, and obviously wearing 35 pounds on your back and then the portage, it’s pretty demanding.”

He added that there are “a lot of fit soldiers in the brigade, and it’s a real challenge for them.”
