Dartmouth residents will take to the streets tomorrow night for the ninth annual March Against Violence to show solidarity against crime and violence in their neighbourhoods.
Nancy Hollis, executive director of the Dartmouth Boys and Girls Club, said the march “is an opportunity for the community to take back the streets and show the true spirit of Dartmouth North.”
The march was originally held to commemorate the life of Jason MacCullough, a young Dartmouth resident who was murdered on the path between Joseph Young Avenue and Pinecrest Drive on Aug. 28, 1999.
MacCullough was very active with the Boys and Girls Club in Dartmouth. His homicide remains unsolved.
Darren Cossar was the executive director of the club at the time of MacCullough’s murder. He said the march was conceived of by youth who knew MacCullough both as a way to deal with the tragedy as well as to show the strength of their community.
Halifax Regional Police Supt. Mike Burns said police are still hopeful someone will step forward with information about the murder.
“As with any homicide investigation, witness information and co-operation is the key element in solving the crime,” he said.
“We’re going to continue to pursue … We don’t want this to slip into the shadows … (We want) to make what was wrong right,” he added. “Make it right for the community, make it right for the family and make it right for Jason.”
March kickoff
The March Against Violence begins at the Dartmouth Boys and Girls Club on Farrell Road tomorrow at 6:30 p.m.
