Both the sun and salsa were out in full force yesterday, as thousands of Calgarians hit Kensington for the annual Sun and Salsa Festival.
Ald. Druh Farrell, former organizer of the festival, said the turnout at her salsa booth and the event in general was fantastic this year.
“Last year was the busiest and I think this might break that record,” she said, estimating that 90,000 people may have attended.
After 30 years at the festival, Antonietta Terrigno, owner of Osteria de Medici restaurant in Kensington, saw her salsa flying off the table this year.
“Oh my God, it’s unbelievable,” she said. “I think there’s over 30,000 people we’ve served here today.”
Among the numerous salsa booths were some of Calgary’s mayoral candidates who set up shop to hand out their own secret recipes.
For Chris Vincent and his friends, there was a clear winner out of the three mayoral candidate salsas from Ric McIver, Kent Hehr and Craig Burrows.
“I vote based on salsa, not politics, so Kent Hehr wins,” said Vincent, adding that his cheesy salsa was different than the others.
