Something’s fishy

Some scientists and aboriginals want the federal government to monitor whether oilsands contamination in a northern Alberta river is making fish sick.

Some scientists and aboriginals want the federal government to monitor whether oilsands contamination in a northern Alberta river is making fish sick.

Ecologist David Schindler made the request standing before dozens of slides of fish with tumours, lesions, deformities and discolourations.

Schindler and his group say environmental monitoring on the Athabasca River must be carried out independent of industry and the Alberta government. They point to a growing number of studies that suggest pollution in the river is increasing, probably due to industrial activity.

Local anglers say the number of such deformed and disturbing catches is growing.
