A Vancouver man who beat a three-month-old pit bull to death with a hammer should face criminal charges, according to the SPCA.

Police were called to a West End apartment complex in the 1100 block of Harwood yesterday morning at 7:30 a.m. when neighbours complained of pounding noises and a dog yelping.

Once inside, officers discovered the young male pit bull puppy in the washroom. It had been hit several times with a hammer and died from its injuries. According to reports, the animal had bitten a resident in the suite.

An SPCA senior animal protection officer said the dog was probably teething.
