The 17-year-old swimmer began the attempt Monday night in Niagara-on-the-Lake and hoped to reach Toronto by about 10 a.m..
Samantha’s mother, Pam, told Kitchener radio station CKGL her daughter will be devastated because she worked hard in preparing for the swim.
Whiteside hoped to break both the women’s record of 15 hours and 10 minutes, and the men’s record of 13 hours and 48 minutes.
