Calgary Dollars co-ordinator Kirti Bhadresa holds up the cold, hard cash Calgarians can earn and use in member businesses around the city to help drive the local economy.

Mall madness got you snowed under this holiday season?

Kirti Bhadresa wants you to take advantage of a little holiday spirit and earn yourself some local currency in the process.

The Calgary Dollars co-ordinator is inviting Calgarians to get involved in the organization’s Holiday Market at the Hillhurst Sunnyside Community Centre on Dec. 12.

Bhadresa said it’s an opportunity for anyone to show off their skills and earn money to spend at local merchants that partner in the Calgary Dollars program.

Worried about what you might have to offer the Holiday Market? No worries, said Bhadresa.

“We believe that everyone has something to offer,” she said, noting a local artist recently signed on to sell his art at the show.

While Calgary Dollars has markets year-round, the Christmas market brings out the most members and the most people looking for holiday cheer — all while supporting the local economy — something Bhadresa says needs more attention.

“Our lifestyle, as we are now, is unsustainable,” she said, adding the survival of the local economy relies upon those who live in that community.

“If you need to make changes (to the lifestyle), the place to look is right here.”

Calgary Dollars has more than 800 members, $80,000 in circulation and has been around for 15 years.

The market runs Dec. 12 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hillhurst Sunnyside Community Association, 1320, 5th Ave. N.W. Call 270-8002 for more details.
