Next month, Ottawa-based photographer Michelle Valberg and writer Joan Weinman will travel to northern Canada to work on a photo-essay book called The Land and Life of the Inuit: Through the Generations.

With the help of Ottawa residents, the two women will also be bringing much-needed sports equipment for the children in communities they visit.

“We have chosen to bring sports equipment because of the strong agreement across the country that community sport is one of the most positive forces in the lives of young people today,” said Valberg.

Ottawa police Chief Vern White — who spent nearly two decades of his career in northern communities — is the honorary campaign captain.

White said northern communities can be the most difficult and challenging to police.

“This city can make a difference in the north,” he said.

Donations can be dropped off by Sept. 11 at Ottawa Canadian Tire stores, all Ottawa Fire Department stations and Valberg Imaging, at 322 Richmond Rd.
