Fifty handguns are missing from a sports store and police blame an employee.

Police say they recently recovered two pistols and set about learning where they came from. One was found in Edmonton and the other was used in a Calgary shooting.

The guns were traced to Wholesale Sports, a Calgary retailer that sells outdoor sporting equipment including firearms, at 25 Heritage Way.

Police now believe an employee from Wholesale Sports and an associate worked together to steal firearms from the store.

On Thursday at about 6:30 p.m., officers arrested an employee and an associate who were observed stealing three handguns, police say. Three weapons were recovered.

A Wholesale Sports inventory revealed more than 50 handguns were unaccounted for.

Calgary police say their investigation now focuses on the whereabouts of these firearms.

A man and woman in their 20s have been charged. More details will be made available soon, police say.
