Stabbing death leaves students with questions

Students at St. Patrick’s-Alexandra School had many questions yesterday about the stabbing death of a well-known elderly man near their school.

“The students are asking ‘Why? It doesn’t make any sense,’” said school principal Ken Fells.

“We don’t have the information so we can only say that these things happen.”

Daniel Martin Newman, 65, was found murdered on a park pathway next to the Maitland Street school at 3:30 a.m. Saturday.

So far, police have no suspects.

“A lot of the children know him very well,” Fells said.

“It is June. What we may want to do is concentrate on what the students’ interests are right now and make them feel comfortable.”
