It seems the Calgary Zoo’s new director of animal care has jumped into his role with both feet.
Dr. Jake Veasey, along with several other staff, rescued a cyclist who had plunged into waist-high water on a pathway that had been flooded by the Bow River Wednesday.
Veasey and his team had been in the northeast area of the park assessing the rising waters caused by an ice jam on the river when they heard screams.
He and two veterinarians waded into the waist-high water and helped the woman ashore.
“I honestly didn’t really think twice about it,” said Veasey, who transferred to the zoo from England earlier this month.
“I had been outside for three or four hours. It was really cold … I was probably a bit hypothermic.”
Both the cyclist and another rider were treated by Calgary EMS and released.
The Calgary Fire Department is warning the public to exercise caution when travelling in the area.
