This weekend will see a global movement take place in the name of eradicating poverty. Last year, it made the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest single, co-ordinated movement of people, when 116 million people participated.
Called “Stand Up, Take Action, End Poverty Now,” the event is co-ordinated by the United Nations Millenium Campaign and Global Call to Action Against Poverty with the aim of spreading awareness about the plight of the world’s poor and calling on world leaders to accountability on the goals set forth in 2000 to eradicate poverty.
People in cities from New York to London to New Delhi to Seoul will be gathering to stand up and pledge their solidarity with the world’s poorest people while at the same time demanding accountability from their governments to speed up efforts to eradicate poverty and hunger by 2015.
In Canada, gatherings have been organized in seven cities — Halifax, Montreal, Quebec City, Ottawa, Toronto, Windsor and Vancouver — through The Art of Living Foundation.
