Stanfield restoration project enters fifth year

Restoration of the Halifax Stanfield International Airport’s airfield has resumed for the fifth year of a six-year project costing about $11 million.

The project will be implemented in phases to decrease the impact on air travel, according to an airport press release.

The restoration is intended to improve overall airport reliability and safety as work crews re-surface the main taxiway and the centre portion of the apron area.

Through July 13, surfaces will be repaved in the apron area of the airfield, which is the space between the de-icing pads and the aircraft gate areas where passengers enter and leave their flights. According to the airport, this will be done in six phases to minimize delays.

From July 14 through Oct. 7, the main taxiway will be repaved and widened, and there will be new lighting. During this construction period, aircraft will be rerouted to other taxiways and airport officials say this will have little effect on flight times.
