Dance for the World organizers, from left, Candace Elder, Sue Garland and Erynn Lyster have arranged for Calgary celebrities to get pledges, raise money and dance at an event Friday.

It’s like Dancing With The Stars for Calgarians, as the first annual Dance for the World fundraiser will turn Quincy’s on Seventh into a glitzy ballroom Friday night.

Local celebrities, including media personalities, musicians and athletes, will put their best feet forward in a contest designed to raise money and awareness for CUSO, a Canadian non-profit organization that sends volunteers around the world to aid developing countries.

Erynn Lyster, outreach leader for CUSO West, says the inaugural dance fundraiser is a fun way to help out the longtime organization. Calgary is the first city to hold the dance fundraiser.

“People get really excited when we liken it to Dancing With The Stars because we’ve never really had anything like this in the city before,” Lyster said.

The dance-off begins at 7 p.m. at Quincy’s on Seventh Friday. Tickets can be bought in the form of a minimum $20 pledge. For more information, check out www.dancefortheworld.ca.
