Stars shine at local theatre

phtos by Pariya Kaligi for Metro Vancouver

Some of my best childhood summer memories include going to see the Theatre Under the Stars (TUTS) musicals at Stanley Park’s Malkin Bowl. From My Fair Lady to Sweet Charity and beyond, this talented group has a Vancouver history dating back to the 1940s.

Keeping up with the times, and the costs, hasn’t always been easy, but after a one-year hiatus, the gang is back and everything’s coming up roses. Last weekend, the cast and crew of Oklahoma and Grease took their final bows on a very successful and profitable season. Then it was off to Earls on Robson to celebrate — celebrity style.

Meanwhile, Yaletown jazz man Rob Gietl, of Capones restaurant fame, didn’t miss a beat with the addition of his new ultra lounge and eatery — Deuce — in North Vancouver. An intimate, invite only party provided a preview of what’s to come from his hip and happening Element Hospitality Group. Cheers

Element Hospitality Group operations manager Ian McTavish and Deuce hostesses Tess McKenna, left, and Jordan Roper agree that the steak lasagna is tops.

Scanning the menu for a share plate for two are Deuce hostesses Maya Scott, left, and Jocelyn Farrell.

Go greased lightning. Studio 58 grad Gaelan Peatty is having a banner year. His portrayal of Danny Zucko has all the girls swooning.

Serving up more than smiles are Deuce’s Krystal Starchuk, left, GM Angie Parkinson and Ashley Macintosh.

Let’s hear it for chorus girls. Laura Kuberstein, left, and Meagan Ekelund kept the boys at bay in Oklahoma.

Kiley Hendriks, a.k.a. Prevail of the Swollen Members, with Alife designer Tony Ferguson, at the Be Bare fashion show.

Summer lovin’ — they had a blast. Grease cast members Daniel Johnston, left, Bryan Nothling, Tyson Coady and Mark Turpin turn in their ducktails for the season.

They were throwing much more than bouquets at each other. Oklahoma lead actors Jayme Armstrong and Mat Baker get a big standing O.

People will say they’re in love, but Oklahoma cast members Melissa Oei and Ryan Egan are strictly good friends.

Local ingredients and a little shared creativity are on the menu thanks to Deuce chefs Paul Carruthers, left, Sam Bailey, Courtney Burnham and Jamie Cholack.

Crab fritters served in little spoons are just part of the sharing menu at Rob Gietl’s new Deuce restaurant. Brielle Wong, left, and Laura Dunn add to the charm.
