State media says 4 students killed in 7.8 magnitude quake in central China

BEIJING – Chinese state media says four students have been killed after an earthquake toppled two primary schools in Chongqing in central China.

Xinhua News Agency says that more than 100 students were also injured in the quake.

Chongqing is a large municipality next to Sichuan province.

The U.S. Geological Survey said on its website that the quake struck 92 kilometres northwest of the provincial capital of Chengdu at 2:28 p.m., local time.

It said the 7.8-magnitude quake was centred about 10 kilometres below the surface.
