Stay wrinkle-free by starting on your plate

Over the years, cosmetic junkies have bought as many “promises of eternal youth” in overpriced jars as they have jam pots. Perhaps the answer lies outside the department store. We spoke to Oprah-approved Dr. Nicholas Perricone, author of The Wrinkle Cure, and left with this advice: Stop looking in the mirror, and look in your plate.

Feed your wrinkles
Dr Perricone claims that an anti-inflammatory diet is the key to wrinkle-free skin. He says that while not visible on the surface, inflammation speeds up the rate at which collagen — the skin’s “glue” — is broken down. By eating the recommended foods, you’ll be protecting your collagen (and yourself) from breaking down.

Green Tea
Rich in anti-oxidants, green tea helps fight inflammation and age-accelerating free radicals. What’s more, green tea contains a compound, theanine, that acts as a natural mood elevator.

Cinnamon
The active ingredients found in this super spice trick the cells into mounting their own defence against aging. No more than one quarter of a teaspoon a day helps prevent wrinkle formation.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Virgin olive oil contains abundant amounts of the antioxidant polyphenol, and the essential fatty acids in olive oil nourish the skin and provide anti-inflammatory activity.

Salmon
Wild salmon is one of the best sources of heart-healthy protein and is rich in omega-3 essential fatty acids. It inhibits inflammation, helping keep the skin looking young, radiant and supple.
