Steele likely not to re-run

The Republican National Committee’s chairman, Michael Steele, is expected to decline the chance to run for a second term, according to a Republican committee member close to the issue.

WASHINGTON – The Republican National Committee’s chairman, Michael Steele, is expected to decline the chance to run for a second term, according to a Republican committee member close to the issue.

Steele’s tenure, which began in the aftermath of President Obama’s election, has been marked by a series of comments that drew criticism and by internal grousing over committee finances, including for the 2012 Republican convention in Tampa.

Shortly after he was elected, Steele, the committee’s first black chairman, said he wanted to apply RNC principles to “urban-suburban hip-hop settings,” becoming fodder for comedians.
