Stelmach taking over for MLA Stevens until byelection

A byelection for former MLA Ron Stevens’ vacant Calgary Glenmore seat will take place in late summer or early fall, the premier’s southern Alberta office said yesterday.

In the meantime it was also confirmed by Metro that Premier Ed Stelmach will take over Stevens’ MLA responsibilities.

David Heyman, spokesperson for the premier’s southern Alberta office, said Stelmach will take over Stevens’ duties at least until session is over next month, but added there may be changes after that.

“There’s a heavy legislative agenda and the premier wants to stay focused on that,” Heyman said.

Former deputy premier and MLA Stevens was appointed a justice of the Court of Queen’s Bench.
