Stimulus projects said to be on time and under budget

Ottawa’s $401-million worth of Economic Stimulus Fund projects should come in $36 million under budget and be 98 per cent complete by the program’s March 31 deadline, according to Wayne Newell, general manager of the city’s infrastructure department.

Newell, who presented the data in a technical briefing to councillors Tuesday, said 75 of the 115 projects – worth about $50 million– have already been completed.

An unexpectedly wet August and September, he said, contributed to delays in construction, and as a result, about $8 million worth of projects won’t be completed by the stimulus programs’ March 31 deadline.

These include final touches on Hazeldean Road and the Carp River bridge ($3.5 million), Terry Fox Drive ($1.5 million) and several road projects, including the Southwest Transitway Extension, Hunt Club Road and Sussex Drive ($3 million).

The city is seeking more time from the federal government for these projects, Newell said.
