Springtime is magical in Stockholm. As soon as the trees start growing leaves, the city comes alive. For a very different weekend of great shopping, lovely walks along the water and fun nightlife, Stockholm is a great choice.
It’s my first time
Old Town
Stockholm is a small big city. Most of the sites are within walking distance. The city is built on islands, but very easy to get around by public transport. The Old Town is remarkably well kept but something of a tourist trap unless you stray beyond the main streets, but don’t miss the Vasa museum (vasamuseet.se) — displaying a superbly preserved warship that sank on its maiden voyage in 1628.
I’ve been before
Boat Trip
Take a boat trip, either around the city islands or a day trip to the archipelago. Go see the bears, wolves, elks and other Swedish animals at open-air museum Skansen. And explore the lively streets of SoFo — south of Folkungagatan — on Södermalm.
Where to eat
Don’t leave before you’ve tried the salmon — cured, salted or smoked — it’s a national dish and very tasty. If you are on a tight budget have a big meal at lunch — there are lots of cafés, nice restaurants and food courts in the business and shopping quarters in the city and around Medborgarplatsen on Södermalm.
Where to hang out
SoFo established itself as Stockholm’s boho-chic area a couple of years ago, and is still defending its title. Design, art, new fashion and vintage stores in abundance. The indie atmosphere at Södermalm is a big contrast to posh Östermalm.
Where to shop
Along Drottninggatan and Hamngatan you’ll find high street chains, department stores and budget fashion. The designer shops are around the red carpet at Biblioteksgatan.
Where to stay
For a small and cozy hotel with historical charm in Södermalm try the Columbus. Berns Hotel and Rival are popular mid-price hotels. Top of the range is the Grand Hotel, check for weekend deals.
Where to go out
For clubs, live gigs and lots of indie fun, head to Södermalm. Some of the best restaurants and pubs are here — on Götgatan, Medborgarplatsen and in SoFo. The posh and glitzy crowd, celebrities and royals, mingle around Stureplan.
