Store owner who shot at robbers may face charges

Police are investigating whether charges should be laid against a Vancouver jewelry store owner who shot at three men as they tried to rob his shop.

“This is an ongoing investigation with regards to the robbery and the shot that was fired, and detectives are still gathering evidence as far as what (crimes) may have been committed,” Const. Lindsey Houghton said yesterday.

Houghton said three men entered Atson’s Jewellers near Robson and Hamilton streets around 10:20 on Tuesday morning and started smashing display cases with a hammer.

One of the men had a gun.

“It appears the owner got out a firearm that he had stored at the store and fired one shot in the direction of one of the suspects. All three of the suspects then ran out of the store to a waiting vehicle,” Houghton said.

“We certainly don’t want people arming themselves,” he added. “We want people to be good witnesses.

We want people to phone 9-1-1 and allow officers to arrive and attend and to use our tools and our expertise.”
