The Calgary fire department will be asking retailers to voluntarily refuse to sell matches and lighters to minors as part of a joint cities pilot project.

The pilot project was announced on Sunday by the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs at its annual conference held in Winnipeg. Toronto, Winnipeg and several smaller communities will join Calgary in promoting the pilot project.

“Fire chiefs consider this pilot project to be an important approach to reducing fire-related injury and property damage, particularly because victims are the youngest and most vulnerable members of our communities,” project leader and Cambridge fire Chief Terry Allen said.

Hundreds of fires are caused each year by children playing with lighters and matches, some resulting in deaths, damage, he added.
